Uncomfortable Truths: From Africa to #GeorgeFloyd in American History

This honors seminar changed my entire perspective on African American History. When I registered for this honors seminar my goal was to expand my knowledge of African American history. I can honestly say I was not expecting to debunk most of the history lessons I learned throughout my academic career (K-12). I do believe I came into this course with an open mind. Up until this course, most conversations that had to do with African Americans were considered closed-door conversations, something you didn't talk about in public. After taking this class, I am no longer shoving uncomfortable conversations behind the door. I learned how to approach uncomfortable topics, discuss them respectfully and most importantly I learned to be proud of who I am, where I come from, and to not be afraid to talk about these Uncomfortable Truths. Throughout this course, we had many readings and intense discussions, each week we had to complete a writing assignment with a prompt related to what we had read/discussed for that week.

I had the opportunity to complete a semester project, which allowed me to put my science hat up for a second and explore my creative art side. We studied a historic African American cemetery in Cincinnati and had to complete a semester project to expand on what we learned and create something to pass on the knowledge to others. I decided to make a coloring book!
